Spring Soil Prep Checklist: Get Your Garden Ready for the Growing Season

Spring is the most important window for building healthy soil — get it right now and your plants will reward you all season long. Whether you're refreshing raised beds, preparing veggie patches, or reviving lawn edges, this checklist will walk you through every step using soil biology as your foundation.

1. Test and assess your soil

Before adding anything, observe your soil after winter. Is it compacted and slow-draining? Pale and lifeless? Sticky clay or powdery sand? Each symptom points to a different starting action. Dig a 20 cm hole — healthy soil should smell earthy (not sour), crumble loosely, and show worm activity.

2. Break compaction with biology, not just tools

Spring compaction is common after wet winters. While aerating with a fork helps physically, pairing it with a microbial inoculant drives lasting improvement. Bionyx introduces beneficial bacteria and fungi that create macro-pores, improving drainage and root penetration naturally over time. Apply after aeration for best results.

3. Replenish calcium and phosphorus

Winter leaching strips soluble minerals, especially calcium — the backbone of strong cell walls in your plants. Osteon is a slow-release bone-based amendment that rebuilds both calcium and phosphorus levels in the soil profile. Broadcast it across beds at the rate indicated on the pack, then water in lightly. It works best when incorporated into the top 5–10 cm.

4. Charge the soil with a biostimulant drench

Once your soil structure is open and mineralised, a liquid biostimulant helps activate the microbial community ahead of planting. Seanova is a cold-processed seaweed extract rich in natural plant hormones, trace elements, and alginic acid — all of which stimulate root growth and support seedling establishment. Dilute and apply as a soil drench 1–2 weeks before transplanting.

5. Add organic matter to top 10 cm

Compost, aged manure, or worm castings mixed into the surface layer feeds soil life through the growing season. Aim for a 2–3 cm layer worked in lightly — no need to deep-dig. This also helps sandy soils retain moisture as temperatures rise.

6. Mulch after planting

A 5–7 cm layer of organic mulch (sugar cane, straw, or wood chip) locks in moisture, moderates soil temperature, and continues to feed fungi as it breaks down. Leave a small gap around plant stems to prevent collar rot.

Spring soil prep at a glance

  • ✅ Observe and diagnose soil condition post-winter
  • ✅ Aerate compacted areas physically
  • ✅ Apply Bionyx microbial inoculant
